Screen_shot_2011-07-15_at_1

So after spending the past few days wrestling with FCP X, I'm starting to feel as though I've got a bit more of an understanding of how its truly handling files. Coming from FCP7 the media management can really seem completely backwards, but if you change the way you think of how it handles projects in general, it will start to make a little bit of sense.

Disclaimer: This solution is only purely from my own understanding of the NLE so far and could be completely way off from what is actually occuring in the App. Please take the time to experiment on your own, and if you do find a better solution, please leave a comment.

"Dreaded Offline Media"

So after grappling with FCPX on a short first edit with the system this week, I decided halfway through that I really wanted to move the project off of my MacBook Pro and on to my main system. The main way I found to accomplish this was to right or control-click on the "Project" in the Project Manager panel and select Duplicate project. I choose the location as my external drive and then proceeded over to the main system that had the same media. Long story short, I came to the realization that there is no reconnect media function in FCPX, so the project would now not connect to anything. My first thought was to be annoyed, and just go back to FCP7 for the project (which I caved on concerning getting my files synced with off-camera audio, but I'll get into that in a later post), but decided to stepback for a second and see if my thought process was completely wrong with the "Revolutionary NLE".

After some proper studying of the file handling, I figured out that they way I've been thinking of the "Project File" was completely wrong. FCPX liked to use the paradigm as iMovie which as far as I gather wants to use whatever drive you tell it to as the primary source for the project and it's media files. What this means is you have no control over your own file structure on the drive as far as the project is concerned. The project is arranged with at least two folders. One for Events and one for Projects. Your media however can exist where ever you choose.

Screen_shot_2011-07-15_at_1

Even though these two references are different, FCPX uses these two spaces at once during a project. So if you copy one without the other you get hosed, and BAM your media goes offline with no way to reconnect. At least thats how its seems. Here's how to think of the way Final Cut Pro X handles a project using the FCP7 file structure as an analogy:

Events = Project Files

Project Files = Sequences

Keyword Collections = Bins

So thinking of FCPX in this way its easy to see how you could definitely get lost on where your files actually are. I'm also an advocate of doing all my Project organization outside of the NLE using folders and subfolders. FCPX does take away my choosing where to save the main project files on the drive, but it does not limit me as far how the media is handled. The one main pill I can see that I have to swallow is now I will not be able to save a project into my own folder structure, I have to let FCPX handle that by using only the two projects and events folders in the main root of the drive.

Screen_shot_2011-07-15_at_1
On a side note, if you take a little bit of time before starting your project to arrange your files in folders and subfolders as you would your bins it will be a much easier process to bring them into FCPX and have a good project structure. One really awesome thing FCPX does during import is let you choose to have it arrange the files in keyword collections that reflect the folders that those files exist in on the drive. So as far as your "bins" go, just arrange in the folders to begin with and you'll save yourself a lot of headache.

So now on to transferring a project to another system. FCPX uses the main root of each drive as its source for projects (minus the main drive which it saves in the movies folder). So keeping that in mind, you'll need to save both the Events and projects into folders onto the drive your going to. The easiest way to do this is to use FCPX. If you right or control-click on the project inside the project library you want to transfer in FCPX, you'll see an option called "Duplicate Project".

Screen_shot_2011-07-15_at_1

Choose this and you'll see this dialog box:

Screen_shot_2011-07-15_at_1

This dialog box gives a couple options. When you're first transfering a project make sure that you select the second option that has FCPX copy both the Project and the Refernced Event FIles. Otherwise FCPX on your other system won't know which Event your project belongs to. Also uncheck "Include Render Files", I did this the first time and it took foever for the the file to duplicate because it was pulling the 30+GB of render files it had already made. FCPX on the other system will just do this again for you in the background and you can keep editing while you do it.

So once thats complete bring, if you didn't save the files directly to the new drive you want to use and just duplicated on the same drive, copy the folders inside the Events and Projects folders that belong to that project, inside other drives FCPX Events and projects folders repectively. Now fire up FCPX on the new system and navigate to the Project Library panel and select the drive that has the transferred project. If you don't see a project, or if the project says in the info panel that its missing an event file, make sure that you copied the whole folders in each of the respective FCP folders on the new drive.

Double click the project to make it live. Now don't panic, odds are you probably still see the media offline thumbnail, but thats supposed to happen, because you still haven't told FCPX where the media exists on this new drive or seperate drive. What you'll want to do now is go over to the "Events Library" panel and right click on the Event associated with the project. From there you'll see a selection that says import files. Click that.

Screen_shot_2011-07-15_at_1

You'll see the usual import dialog box pop up. Navigate to your drive and folder that has all your media and import the entire root. You should now see all your media back online. Basically what your first seeing in FCPX when you transfer a project without media is an Event with a Project and Keyword Collections that refer to media that it hasn't imported yet. Your Event is basically one big bin that holds all the media the whole time and your keyword collections only refer back to that media. Once you'll pull the media files back into the event, FCPX automatically reconnects everything and your good to go.

So I hope this helps if you've been pulling your hair out trying to transfer projects back and forth in FCPX. Again please note that this was just the way I had figured out how to make it work for my purposes. This still could be a completely wrong process of transfer a project, which it still basically is, but so far it works for what I need. Please comment if you have any other tips or find a much easier and faster way then I just have to transfer projects. I'll post more about FCPX and how I've been able to figure out little by little along the way as well in the coming days.

Wanted to offer up a quick on location video blog of using the H4n for location sound while shooting time-lapse. We had a lot of questions in our last class about what the need of off camera sound would be if you can just purchase the Canon 5D MkII or even the Canon 60D that both have a way of turning off Audio Gain Control (AGC). For me this is the main reason. Having the option to shoot location sound to mix into the edit in post is a huge gain.

Been in Charlotte, North Carolina this week. Really awesome downtown out here, has some amazing architecture to shoot if you ever get the chance. For this client I had to rent some local lighting equipment. If your ever shooting in this area and need grip equipment, definitely hit up the people over at Hollywood Rentals. Always a great attitude and they always have the gear I need. :)

Today we're launching the teaser trailer for our new Web Series "Today of All Days".

Synopsis

"Today of all Days" is a new mini-webseries from Streamy Award winning producer, Josh Negrin. "Today of all Days" is an action comedy about a groom that mistakenly gets pulled into a gun fight, by his best friend, 30 minutes before his wedding. "Today of All Days" is a jam packed Action Comedy Web Mini Series that will be launched in 3 separate episodes over the course of the next few weeks.

Production

Photo_3

"Today of All Days" was shot using the Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 7D. We utilized these cameras for the obvious reason of their ability to shoot the film-look with shallow depth of field. But not only that these cameras made shooting our short film a much richer experience, mainly due to the amount of freedom these cameras aloud us.

The first huge advantage of HDSLR's in short film is there size. This huge impact on how you carry the camera and for how long. Our production was based on a lot of action with the need to keep the camera mobile for almost 75% of the shoot. But while the size and weight of these cameras in relation to the sensor size is amazing, as many in the HDSLR community know, it can also be your downfall without the right rigging involved. That's where RedrockMicro came in:

"Redrock Microsystems, LLC was founded in 2004 by a group of avid digital filmmakers whose desire to produce high quality movie images without access to huge budgets led them to start Redrock Micro: a company committed to the express purpose of bringing cinema-quality accessories to market at revolutionary prices. We believe in - and - enable the privelege of personal ownership of production equipment."

http://store.redrockmicro.com/

Redrock Micro has an amazing system when it comes to their production gear that gives the shooter the ability to completely shape and mold their equipment to the needs of the production. On this shoot I had the eyeSpy Balance bundle (http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/DSLRShoulderMountedRigs/eyeSpy-Balance-DSLR-2-0-Rig). Not only was this rig an essential piece of kit to have on set when shooting anything handheld, it also gave me the opportunity to build with it a version of the bundle that Stu Maschwitz (http://prolost.com) came up with called the Captian Stubling (http://store.redrockmicro.com/Catalog/DSLR-Handheld-Rigs/Captain-Stubling-DSLR-Bundle)

Photo_4

Honestly if your shooting any kind of action sequence, this is an essential piece of kit to have. The amount of fluid motion this kit affords you is amazing. Plus with the configuration that redrock offers, you'll also have control of image with the use of their follow focus.

Photo_1

For this shoot we also used Canon L glass to take advantage of the higher image quality and faster speeds as opposed to regular EF lenses. The only disadvantages to the Canon L lenses has over some others lens choices like say Zeiss for instance, is the lack of hard stops in the focus ring, and the way how Canon lenses have a very unforgiving shift in the focus distance the further you go. Once your focusing any where past say 4 ft for instance, the focus begins to pull much faster. This can be a real pain when trying to find your focus points. That being said, no matter what lenses your using, try to get in the habit of marking your focus points and possibly having a Focus puller on location.

Professional Talent

I wanted to stress how important it is to have professionals on set with you when making a short film or any production. All of us on the production have a passion for film-making and the craft of storytelling. It was a privilege to be able to work with such focused and professional actors like Josh Negrin (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2020573/) and Drew Cohn (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1682647/). That combined with the acting direction of Jared Ward (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1983393/) I feel brought our production value to the next level. Plus when your shooting an independent production and spending over 18+ hours on your production days (which we did), you want to feel you can trust the team your working with. As aspiring film-makers, we've all made mistakes when it comes compromising on our talent for the sake of just getting our production in the can at one time or another. This is the one huge mistake that many student and independent film-makers make that basically ruins a production because the story was not properly translated to the screen. Always remember the value of acting talent and also never under estimate your responsibility to properly direct those actors. ;)

Please check back at our Vimeo channel weekly to see the each episode over the next few weeks. (http://vimeo.com/channels/149074#16915077)

You can also follow myself (http://twitter.com/EmrysROBERTS), Josh Negrin (http://twitter.com/joshnegrin) and Drew Cohn (http://twitter.com/drewcohn) for updates on when knew episodes are launched.

Some still captures from the Boston Shoot this week. Can't wait to pull the footage together. This project will be on going for a few weeks as the client works out the message they want to convey, but had a chance to get some of the B-Roll out of the way. Planning on doing a post on how the Redrock Helo rig worked out. Definitely an option if you don't have access to a cineflex system. :)

One awesome part about owning a Redrock rig is having the ability to create your own configurations for the needs you have. For my aerial shoot tomorrow, I needed something to give me more stability while I'm shooting out the window of the helicopter.

I remembered seeing redrocks Ultraport DSLR bundle. With having the new eyeSpy balance rig I just got, I'm able to create that same rig and actually make a rather effective handheld rig for shooting in the confined space of the helicopter. I also have the camera strap still attached which helps just that little bit more. Basically you hold the camera away from your body while letting the camera strap pull on you, which counters a lot of motion. Definitely try this configuration out when doing some handheld work. Can be a real life saver :)

Sun, 10 Oct 2010 22:25:00 -0700 Packing for Air Travel http://southlanddslr.com/packing-for-air-travel http://southlanddslr.com/packing-for-air-travel

Photo

Recently in an interview I did with Thomas Roberts for indiespot.tv, he mentioned that I should actually try to do a post about packing your gear for traveling on an airline. Since tomorrow I fly out for a trip to Boston for a shoot with a full gear load, I figured this would be the perfect time. First aspect of airline travel is you'll need to know the clients budget for you and your gear getting to the site. Most of the assignments I've done, the client isn't very willing to pay over the regular airline fees. This basically restricts you to 2 carry on bags and 2 checked bags. This obviously is a very limited amount of space but if you pack it right, you can get a lot more gear to fit then you think you would. In the picture in this post you can see the following bags I have to take.

1. Tamrac Camera Bag/Laptop bag
2. Kata ENG Size bag with rollers
3. Mid sized luggage bag with 360 degree rollers
4. Manfrotto tripod bag

When deciding on your gear bags, make sure you take into account how your gonna have to carry them once you've reached the destination. I use the backpack and Kata bags as my carryon's which house all the sensitive camera gear. Also make sure that you try to book on larger planes when you can. Take any "express" flight and your going to be stuck on a small Canada Air jet that basically has no overhead and barely any footspace. In those occasions be prepared to pull any sensitive camera equipment out of the second bag and put in the overhead bare. Not the most fun experience.

And in the other luggage bag I take all my extra gear (slider, smaller tripod, etc) and my cloths. Then of course the larger tripod bag is checked as well. Both the Kata bag and the luggage bag have rollers making it easier for me to carry all the gear myself. Basically I have the backpack on my back with the large tripod slung over that, and then each roller bag in a hand. When picking your luggage bag, make sure you can fit a lot of gear and personal effects, but be very careful not to over stuff. Once you've gone over the 50 pound limit per checked bag, the airline will charge you $150+ to check the bag and that's over the checked baggage cost to begin with. Not fun at all to find that out when you already pack everything to the limit. One other note would be to think creatively when you pack. Try to break all your gear down to as basic a level as possible. That will help to fit pieces into much smaller places. In these bags I've managed to fit:

Canon 7D
Battery Grip
Canon 20mm
Canon 85mm
Canon 50mm
Canon 16-35mm
Canon 70-200mm
Lens filters Batteries
Cards
15" laptop
2 external hard drives Card reader
Canon XH-A1
Zoom H4n
Sennheiser Wireless Lav
2 shotgun mics
Redrock eyeSpy rig with weights
701HDV head and tripod
501HD head and tripod
Manfrotto monopod
Reflector
Micro Pro LED light
And personal effects

And all this gear still comes in under the weight limits, but remember this is following the idea that your client doesn't cover excess baggage fees. Main things to remember are:

1. Use all the space you can
2. Use efficient luggage, bags with wheels are much more useful then ones without.
3. Keep your weight distributed, don't let any bag go over 50 pounds or it can cost you big time at the ticket counter.

Sat, 09 Oct 2010 18:17:00 -0700 Must Watch: The Bridge http://southlanddslr.com/must-watch-the-bridge http://southlanddslr.com/must-watch-the-bridge

Just caught this film on Vimeo in Staff Picks. This director made this 30 minute short film in his spare time on the weekends and on a shoe string budget. He used 7D about 75% of the time and then 5D Mark 2 the rest. His reasoning for that was because at the moment of production, the 7D was the only Canon with 24p.  Very brilliant use of story and and even better skill in his directing of the piece. So many sequences we very well executed. So many people forget that in film, less is more. Allowing the audience imagination to fill in the gaps, sells your movie so much more than trying to force feed something contrived. If you have a spare 30 minutes. Please watch this film. :)
